What Makes a Great Flying Cocker Spaniel Action Photo?

There’s something unforgettable about seeing a Cocker Spaniel mid-flight—ears flapping, paws off the ground, eyes sparkling with joy. These “flying” action shots have become iconic for a reason: they capture the true spirit of a spaniel in motion.

But what actually goes into creating that perfect flying Cocker Spaniel photo?

Let’s take a look behind the scenes on what makes these images so special—and how we achieve them in the enchanting forests of Windsor and Ascot.

1. Energy + Personality = The Magic Formula

Flying Cocker Spaniel shots are more than technical camera work. They’re a celebration of who your dog is when they are at their happiest—playful, free, and full of bounce.

Each dog brings something different. Some leap after toys, others sprint joyfully through the trees. The key is letting them be themselves in a safe, open space where they feel relaxed and excited.

2. The Right Woodland Environment

Our action photography take place in carefully chosen woodland areas in Windsor and Ascot, where your Cocker Spaniel can safely run off-lead.

What we look for:

  • Clear running paths with soft ground for safe take-offs and landings
  • Natural lighting through the trees for that magical, golden glow
  • Quiet, distraction-free spots so your Cocker Spaniel stays focused on the fun

These locations aren't just pretty—they’re practical and proven for creating spectacular results.

3. Light That Brings Movement to Life

The dappled light in the woods is ideal for action photography. It adds contrast, atmosphere, and mood without being harsh.

We aim for early morning or golden hour sessions, when the light is soft and warm. It helps highlight the texture of the coat, catch light in the eyes, and give every airborne photo a cinematic feel.  We will always photograph at the other times of the day if needed, particularly for those travelling some distance.

4. Clever Use of Toys and Tricks

No two Cocker Spaniels are the same—so how we encourage them to “fly” varies.

For some:

  • A favourite toy thrown just ahead prompts a joyful leap
  • A call from the owner at the end of a trail gets a sprint and jump
  • A game of chase or recall brings out their natural bounce

Everything is done gently, with breaks and rewards. It’s always about joy, never pressure.  It's fun for everyone - including us!

5. Fast Shutter, Steady Hands, and Years of Practice

Behind every stunning flying Cocker Spaniel photo is a photographer who knows spaniels—and knows their camera inside and out.

It takes:

  • Split-second timing to catch the highest point of a leap
  • Fast shutter speeds to freeze motion crisply
  • A creative eye to frame the action beautifully within the natural environment

It also takes patience. Some dogs “fly” on the first run. Others take 20 minutes to settle. That’s absolutely fine—because when the moment comes, it’s more than worth it.  Just take a look through some of our recent photos.
